Take these five steps when redesigning your home office

A well-designed home office.
With some focus, it doesn't take much to create an office space at your home,
which will help you to maximize your productivity and creativity.

It's hard to overstate the importance of having a proper home office when working from home. A good one will not only maximize your productivity and creativity but will also help you reduce stress and improve your overall health. On the other hand, having a poor home office can make your work unnecessarily difficult and make you unfocused and sloppy. So, with this in mind, let's see how you should redesign your home office so that you are as productive and creative as possible.

How to redesign your home office

The main reason why you need to have a well-designed home office is that our surroundings have a profound effect on us. Whether we like it or not, the place we spend time will affect our emotions, thoughts, and health. Once you understand that, it will become perfectly clear that if you don't design your home office properly, working from home can be bad both for your health and work.

Your home office can have a profound effect on your capabilities and efficiency,
so make your home office design constructive in enhancing your business efficiency.

Now, there are many ways a person can design their home office. People who deal with creative work usually tend to have spacy home offices in order to feel free and uninhibited. Meanwhile, people who deal with more logical work, usually like to have their home offices comfortable and have natural light in order to stimulate their minds for solving difficult tasks. Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a perfect home office. There is only your home office and you making it as good as possible. So, let's go over the necessary steps you have to take in order to properly redesign your home office.

Step 1: Sort

One of the most common causes of bad home offices is too much clutter. After spending some time working from their home offices, people tend to clutter them up. And, if not noticed on time, this clutter can become a problem. So, the first thing you need to do is figure out which part of your office supplies is clutter. Our advice is to sort all of these supplies into three groups.

  1. The things you are sure that you will need.
  2. The things you are sure that you will not need.
  3. And the things you are not sure about.

It is not uncommon for people to have most of their items in the third group, as being so cut and dry with your office supplies can be difficult. But, if that happens, you'd be much better off putting all the items from the third group into the second one. Trust us when we say that there's a much higher chance of you saving useless items, then getting rid of necessary ones.

Step 2: Declutter

Once you have formed your groups, the time will come to declutter. Now, there are essentially two things you will have to deal with here. First, you will have to figure out what to do with the items you no longer need. You can choose to donate them or sell them, both of which can be hard to do with office supplies. So, expect that you'll have to do a bit of research.

It is surprisingly easy to clutter up your home office with things you don't actually need,
which can inhibit your clear thinking and concentration.

The second thing you'll have to deal with is what to do with the supplies that you need, but don't have room for. The best course of action is usually to get some bins and put your items in a storage unit. Bins will keep your belongings clean in storage, especially if you know how to pack them properly. Avoiding having a cluttered home office is paramount, which is why a storage unit can be of great help.

Step 3: Consider your office layout

Now that your home is decluttered, you can properly consider your office layout. Our advice is to first go online and look for inspiration. People design their offices in quite creative ways. So, we wouldn't be surprised is you stumble upon something that never even crossed your mind. Once you do find a layout that you like, implement the basics of it. While it may seem that you should redesign your home office in one go, it is actually not the best course of action. The only tried and true way to find what kind of a home office is suited for you is to try different designs and find what works.

Step 4: Light and colors

Light and colors play a big role in how healthy, stimulating and productive your home office is going to be. So, if you are going to redesign your home office for maximum productivity, you need to consider them carefully. When it comes to natural light, large windows, thin curtains, and clean glass are a must. After that, you will probably need to add artificial light. A blue light will help you stay awake, while a yellow light will be easier on your eyes and less tiring. So, try both before you make your choice.

You need to pay close attention to both light and colors when you redesign your home office,
to keep it simple and effective, stimulating to your work from home.

Colors, on the other hand, have their own set of influences you should be aware of. Cold colors like blue or dark green will give a feel of tranquility as they subconsciously remind us of nature. Warmer colors like yellow or red are not usually suited for a home office as they give the feeling of comfort. So, ideally, you should first try colder colors and experiment with warmer ones only if you feel that the former is not working for you.

Step 5: Adding office supplies

A lot of home office jobs require you to use more than a laptop. If this is the case, you will probably end up adding new office supplies as you go along. The only advice we have for you here is to have a minimalist mindset. Especially if you are just starting to work from home. Today, there seems to be a gadget for everything. Therefore, it can be very easy to clutter up your home office again. Remember to start slow and only add items that you are sure are necessary.
